In this edition of Mellody's Money Survival Guide, "Good Morning America" takes a look at the five things you should not do with your money right now.

Do Not Hide Your Money in a Mattress
When people panic, it's basically their brains saying, "There is danger. You have to do something." If, however, you have been prudent before the turbulence hit, the sensible thing may be to resist the urge to act.

Through Sept. 19, there have been just fewer than 20 banks that have "failed" in 2008. True, nobody would prefer to have their money in a bank that fails, but your money is safe.

The federal government created the FDIC, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, in 1933 to backstop banks and prevent Americans from losing their money. Specifically, savings and checking accounts are insured to $100,000 per depositor in each bank or thrift (a savings and loan) that the FDIC insures.

So if you are one of the vast majority of Americans with less than $100,000 in the bank -- $200,000 if married -- then you simply don't need to fret should your bank get into trouble.

Do Not Go Another Day Without Checking Your Credit Report
Your credit score is the key piece of information that affects decisions on everything -- from whether or not you get a loan, credit card, home or job.

The national average is 676, but individual scores can range from 330 to 830 -- the higher the score, the lower the credit risk.

According to the Public Interest Research Group, one in four credit reports has errors that are serious enough to disqualify consumers from opening a bank account, purchasing a home or even getting a job.

The easiest way to obtain a free credit report is to log on to www.annualcreditreport.com

Additionally, you can obtain a copy of your report by calling the toll-free numbers of the respective big three: Equifax, Experian and Transunion.

You want to make sure everything on there is correct, from former addresses to current bills. This is necessary for everyone.

Do Not Be Shy About Talking to Creditors
Get on the phone now! Call your mortgage lender, call your bank, call your credit card company. No one wants you to default. If you fear you're falling behind, call them to try to work out a deal.

For credit card companies, see if you can get a lower percentage rate. Both your mortgage lender and credit card companies are going to be more willing to work with you now than they will be later.

Do Not Sell Your Stocks or Mutual Funds
Now is not a good time to sit on the sidelines when it comes to saving for retirement. As I have said time and time again, it is absolutely impossible to time the market. There have been a number of studies that have shown that the drawbacks from missing just a handful of the best days of the market far outweigh the benefits of missing the worst days.

Again, one of my favorite sayings is that bull markets always follow bears. You do not want to miss it on this rebound!

Do Not Be Late Paying Bills
First, pay what you can't live without. That's your mortgage or rent and utilities. Then you need to prioritize the other bills. Start with whichever ones have the highest interest rates and then go from there. Even paying a little on time is better than being late.

一般的自行车都只有二个轮子, 要是有三个轮子呢? 没错, 那第三个轮子就是多余的. 所以 Third wheel 就是美语中电灯泡正确的表示方法. 还有一个讲法, 叫 I don't want to be the third arm. 这里不是说 “三只手”的意思, 而是和 third wheel 一样, 都是电灯泡的意思.

2. He is dating another girl on the side. 他同时脚踏两条船.

我想把这句说成 I have my feet in two boats 的人也不在少数吧! 其实正确的说法应该是像这样, He is dating another girl on the side. 或是你可以说 He is dating another girl behind her back. (这个 her 指的是他女朋友的意思)

On the side 这句话你去餐厅用餐时也常用到, 指的是主菜之外的副餐, 比如说 I'd like salad with dressing on the side. 就是说我要沙拉和沙拉酱. 或是 Would you like a baked potato on the side? 要不要再点一份烤马铃薯啊?

3. I am the one-woman kinda man. 我是那种从一而终的男人.

在美国从一而终的人好像不多, 他们通常从高中就开始交男女朋友, 一直交到结婚, 中间不知改朝换代过多少次. 所以这句话是很难得听到的. 其实我比较常听的是 one-man woman, 因为看来不论中外, 女生都比男生坚贞一点. kinda在口语中常用, 它是 kind of 的简写, kinda man 就是说那样的男人。可以省略不说.

还有一种用法叫 We are exclusive. 这个 exclusive 指的是排他的意思. 所以当一对情侣说, We are exclusive时, 就是说我们心里只有对方一人, 我们都不会再去喜欢上别人.

4. Those boys like to hit on me all the time. 那些男生老爱找我搭讪.

Hit somebody 是说你打某人的意思, 但是 hit on somebody 就不一样了, hit on somebody 是当作搭讪来解释. 常常电视剧里可以看到, 一个男的跑去跟一个陌生女孩多说了两句话, 那个女生就说: Are you hitting on me? 你现在是在跟我搭讪吗? 实在是很有意思。

5. That's the long distance relationship. 我和我的情人分隔两地.

一般relationship都是特别指男女朋友之间的关系, 比如你可以跟你的另一半说, I really appreciate our relationship. 就是我很感激我们能够在一起.

Long distance relationship是一种固定用法, 这样的讲法我常在广播中听到. 他们一般情况下不会说成 We live far away from each other. 只会说 We have a long distance relationship. 再来你可能可以接著说, It's so hard for me.

6. You should have chivalry. 你应该有点绅士风度。

我觉得美国的男生都蛮有风度的, 他们会帮女士开门 (这点在美国尤其重要, 因为美国的空气太乾燥了, 所以去开门常常会触电 ^__^ ) 会让 Lady first. 这种行为中文叫绅士风度, 但在英文中叫骑士精神 (chivalry)

7. I saw you smooching that girl just outside my window. 我看到你在我的窗外亲那个女孩喔。

Smooch 是一个口语, 它就完全等于大家所熟知的 kiss 这个字.

8. I'm all over you. 我对你非常地著迷.

All over you 就是说对你非常地著迷, 这还有另一种表示方法, 叫 I have a crush on you. 这二句都是表达很喜欢某人的意思.

All over somebody 还有一个很常用的用法, 我把它翻成“三贴”比如说你去舞厅跳舞, 看到有一对男女跳到三点都贴在一起了, 你就可以跟你的同伴说, Hey, look, the guy is dancing all over the girl.

9. I'm over you. 我跟你之间完了。

一字之差但是意思完全不同喔. 你要是说 I'm over you, 就是说我跟你之间完了, 我不想再和你有任何的瓜葛. 这和 I'm all over you 是完全不一样的。

10. Are you trying to seduce me? 你想要勾引我吗?

Seduce 就是说你用言语或是行为去勾引某人. 这句话在美国派 (American Pie) 当中有用到过喔! 就是其中有一个男生最后找不到伴了, 结果跑去勾引一个老女人. 那个老女人就说了, Are you trying to seduce me?

更好玩的是, 那个男生事后还跟同伴吹牛, "Women are like wine. They only get better with age." 女人吗, 就像老酒一样, 只会越陈越香。

上个星期五，澳大利亚朋友Robert带着他的朋友David Shannon来到沪江。David是伦敦西区最著名的音乐剧演员之一，当之无愧的明星，也是出场费最高的舞台剧演员，几乎所有数得着的音乐剧他都担任过男主角。

WOW，强悍，最近他也录制了自个人专辑，还参与了莎翁经典Macbeth的演出，依然是男主角。

这两个人并不知道专访间什么风格，穿着背心就来了，黑白双煞？汗！我笑称他们是两个boxer。

这我做专访3年来，谈得最流畅的一次。当然得益于我和Robert的朋友关系，还有我临时做的功课。

当中提到的很多信息，相信对于国内的观众来说都是新鲜的。音乐剧迷可以多多关注！

The plane was late and detectives were waiting at the airport all morning. They were expecting a valuable parcel of diamond from South Africa.

A few hours earlier,someone had told the police that thieves would try to steal the diamonds. 作为有一定外语基础的人想提高英语，找老外说话是一种收效比较好的途径。但是大街上找人聊天可太不礼貌了，找机构嘛时间又不方便。所以小编一直在留意经济实惠的学习方法。

最近小编我听说了一件新鲜事，外教也有钟点工。这种钟点工主要有几点好处：

1.时间地点自由。想什么时候学就什么时候学，想在哪学就在哪学。

5.授课内容自主。学校上课都是老师讲啥咱听啥，这回咱可以想听啥让外教讲啥，要是赶上外国人的什么聚会什么活动，还可以请外教带咱去见识见识。这可比书本上学到的印象深刻多了。这样不仅可以学到语言，还能更深刻地了解到西方的文化。

至于语言方面，这些外教主要来自英国、美国、加拿大、澳大利亚等英语母语的国家，英语的纯正自是不必担心。

美国联邦政府和抵押贷款业组织于本月11日宣布了一项抵押贷款协议修改计划，旨在简化对房利美和房地美所持违约抵押贷款协议进行重新谈判和修改的程序。该方案将对数以十万计借款者的贷款条件做出修改，以抑制止赎率的飙升。

More than 4 million American homeowners, or 9 percent of borrowers with a mortgage were either behind on their payments or in foreclosure at the end of June, according to the most recent data from the Mortgage Bankers Association.

在上面的报道中，foreclosure 就是指 the legal proceedings initiated by a creditor to repossess the collateral for loan that is in default，“止赎权”，也称“丧失抵押品赎回权”，我们在新闻里有时也会看到一栋栋小楼前竖立着写着 Foreclosure 的牌子。对房地产来说， foreclosure 指的是这样一个过程：如果房主在一定时间内无法按时付出每月的贷款额，房屋将被贷款公司没收，然后通过拍卖公司或房地产公司上市出售。当然，这样的房子的售价要比市价更低一些。

Foreclosure 是 foreclose 的名词形式，foreclose 做动词表示“取消抵押品赎回权”，如：The building society will be forced to foreclose on this mortgage because regular payments have not been made.（由于没有定期交纳付款，住宅互助协会被迫取消这项抵押的赎取权。）此外，它还可以用来表示“排除，阻止或预先处理”。如：We won't foreclose the prospect of a better future.（我们不会拿我们的未来开玩笑。）
