PE Hub is reporting that Shanghai-based Profex Inc. has gotten hold of $15.5 million in first round venture capital funding.

Profex is a dermatology startup in China. The funding round was co-led by Trident Capital and its Chinese affiliate Mustang Ventures.

Trident Capital estimates that dermatology and skin care market in China is worth $1.3 billion and is growing by 20% per year. Trident Capital has about $1.5 billion in funds currently under management.

Mustang Ventures has 10 years of investment experience in China and is focused on early stage development.

The Inquisitr ran a post yesterday saying that domain registrar GoDaddy is being blocked in China.

According to the Inquisitr's source, GoDaddy started being blocked during the Beijing Olympic games. Part of the problem, evidently, was people registering domain names based on the names of China's Olympic gold medalists.

The Chinese government had banned anyone but the nation's Olympic gold medalists from registering domains based on the athletes' names within the ".cn" suffix. It even "advised" anyone who already owned such a domain to turn it over to the medalist "as a gift."

The official word from GoDaddy on the issue is "No comment."

PE Hub is reporting that Venture Capital research group Zero2IPO has raised $60 million for a second China-focused investment fund.

Zero2IPO is based in Beijing and tracks the China venture capital market. The new fund has 46 investors and the $60 million in capital raised for it makes it about four times as large as the grops original fund.

According to PE Hub, "The only limited partner listed on the regulatory filing is British Virgin Island-based Inter Private Equity. The managers listed on Zero2IPO China Fund II include Danny Chung Wai Chi and Ni Zhengdong. Zhengdong, who is also known as Gavin Ni, is the CEO of Zero2IPO. Chung Wai Chi is the publishing company's COO."

China's economy may (or may not) be slowing down, but the decision makers behind venture capital investment in the Middle Kingdom couldn't care less.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this week that "the amount of venture capital fueling companies in China surged 85% in the first half of 2008."

Venture capital firms invests an impressive $2.15 billion in Chinese companies in the first half of 2008. High on the list of target: Internet companies.

Many pundits are predicting that China's economy will start a downward slide in a few days. Among those nay sayers are Dexter Roberts and Frederik Balfour at BusinessWeek:

China spent some $43 billion and the better part of a decade preparing for the Beijing Olympics. But now, like a party host surveying the house as the revelry winds down, it is contemplating what will happen when the Games end on Aug. 24.

After giving a specific example or two, Roberts and Balfour point out that companies across China are "grappling with rising labor costs, high fuel prices, and the strengthening Chinese currency."

The strengthening currency is bad for exports.

A number of sources including the Huffington Post are reporting on 79-year-old Wu Dianyuan and her 77-year-old neighbor, Wang Xiuying. The two elderly Chinese women who applied to hold a protest during the Olympics. On Sunday they were order "to serve a year long term of reeducation through labor," according to the Huffington Post.

PE HUB is reporting that Shanghai has decided to let foreign investors register legally as local equities investment firms. That includes private equity and venture capital funds. The move is designed to entice overseas investment into China's financial hub.

The move allows foreign investors with a focus on investment in China to set up a Shanghai-registered entity - provided that can start out with at least 100 million yuan (about US $14.5 million at today's exchange rate). The new Shanghai entity gets legal status of a local investment company, along with special tax treatment.

PE HUB is reporting that HD Biosciences Inc. of Shanghai has raised an undisclosed amount of Series A funding.

HD Bio is a biology contract research group. Morningside Venture and Lilly Asian Ventures led the round together. Pfizer Venture Investments was also involved in the funding.

"We are pleased to have such an outstanding group of investors supporting the ongoing effort to build a world-class biology CRO serving the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries," said Xuehai Tan, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of HD Biosciences. "As chemistry outsourcing increasingly shifts to China, we see a growing demand for in vitro screening and in vivo study services in China. The investment by Morningside, Lilly Asian Ventures and Pfizer Venture Investments enables the company to capitalize on this trend with a service offering that is unrivaled both in breadth and quality."

The company intends to use the proceeds of this financing to fund the expansion of its high throughput screening program and build new capabilities in in vivo biology and DMPK bio-analytical services.
